Camel crickets — the humpbacked, long-legged, wingless crickets that jump at you in a garage or basement — require high humidity. They live in the crawl space, under decks, and in mulch beds, and they move indoors when their harborage dries out or gets crowded.

A steady trickle of them in the house means the space beneath it is humid enough to sustain a population year round. In this region that almost always means a vented crawl space taking on summer air, a compromised vapor barrier, or a drainage problem.

Why spraying alone fails

A perimeter treatment kills the individuals crossing it. It does not change the humidity, so the population under the house keeps producing. Homeowners who treat repeatedly without touching the moisture usually report the same numbers by the following summer.

The sequence that works

Inspect and measure crawl space humidity and wood moisture content. Correct bulk water and drainage. Re-lay or seal the vapor barrier, or encapsulate if the readings justify it. Then treat the perimeter and harborage to knock down what is left. Done in that order, the problem stays solved.

Identification

Up to two inches, reddish-brown with a pale figure-eight marking behind the head. Usually seen singly, at night, in bathrooms, basements, and near floor drains.

Why it is here

They live in sewers, storm drains, and damp crawl spaces and enter through plumbing penetrations and defective sewer lines. Older municipal infrastructure across Norfolk and Portsmouth keeps populations high.
