The mechanism

Telling them apart

German cockroaches are small — roughly half an inch — tan, with two dark stripes running lengthwise behind the head. You find them in kitchens and bathrooms, clustered near warmth and food, and you find them at every life stage at once.

American cockroaches are large, reddish brown, up to an inch and a half, and they show up singly, often at night, often near a floor drain, a crawl space access, or a plumbing penetration. Oriental roaches look similar in habit but are darker and glossier.

Why the distinction changes the treatment

German roaches reproduce indoors and never need to leave. Control is a gel bait rotation, growth regulator, harborage reduction, and sanitation work — and it is a multi-visit process because you are working through egg cases. Broad spraying makes it worse by scattering the population.

American and oriental roaches are usually coming in from a wet space. The fix is exclusion and moisture: seal the penetration, correct the crawl space, cap or repair the failed drain line. Interior treatment without that is a recurring charge.

What we do on the first visit

Identify the species, map where they are actually harboring with monitors, and separate the sanitation and structural pieces from the treatment piece so you know exactly what is ours to fix and what is yours.

Identification

Up to two inches, reddish-brown with a pale figure-eight marking behind the head. Usually seen singly, at night, in bathrooms, basements, and near floor drains.

Why it is here

They live in sewers, storm drains, and damp crawl spaces and enter through plumbing penetrations and defective sewer lines. Older municipal infrastructure across Norfolk and Portsmouth keeps populations high.
