Hampton Roads
Pest & Termite Control
Defense from the ground up.
Coastal Virginia houses fail from underneath. Vented crawl spaces, a high water table, and salt-air humidity produce termites, decay fungus, and the insects that follow moisture. Guardex eliminates what is active, restores what was lost, and shuts off the conditions that caused it.

What Guardex does
Termite, pest, moisture, and structural work for coastal Virginia
Guardex is a Hampton Roads pest control company built around the way houses actually fail here. Our region is a tidewater plain: sandy fill over a high water table, tidal creeks running through neighborhoods, and a housing stock that leans heavily on vented crawl spaces. Homeowners search for termite treatment in Virginia Beach, pest control in Chesapeake, or a crawl space encapsulation contractor in Norfolk — and underneath all three requests sits the same variable: how much water is in the wood.
That is why every Guardex program starts with an inspection that measures rather than guesses. A technician reads wood moisture content at the sill plate, band joist, and floor joists, documents grade and drainage at the foundation, checks vents and vapor barrier coverage, and identifies the species before proposing a treatment. Eastern subterranean termites, Formosan subterranean termites, powderpost beetles, old house borers, and brown rot decay fungus all damage structural lumber, and each one calls for a different response.
From there the work runs in order. Eliminate the active infestation with a liquid termiticide barrier, baiting system, or targeted interior treatment. Protect the structure on a recurring exterior cycle sized to coastal pest pressure — American and oriental cockroaches, odorous house ants, Argentine ants, spiders, camel crickets, mice, rats, and salt-marsh mosquitoes. Restore the lumber that already lost section: sill plates, band joists, floor joists, subfloor, and the girders under them. Prepare the property so the same conditions do not rebuild — vapor barrier, drainage correction, dehumidification, vent strategy, and exclusion at every penetration.
Because so much of our volume runs through real estate transactions, documentation is a product here, not an afterthought. Guardex issues NPMA-33 wood-destroying insect reports with photographs and treatment estimates for VA, FHA, and conventional closings across South Hampton Roads, Virginia Peninsula, Isle of Wight. Agents get a report their underwriter accepts; buyers get an honest description of what is under the house.

The four pillars
One sequence, run in the right order

Eliminate
Termites & WDI
Eastern subterranean and Formosan pressure, liquid termiticide barriers, baiting, and NPMA-33 reports for VA and HUD closings.

Protect
Pest Control
Quarterly exterior programs built for coastal humidity — roaches, ants, spiders, camel crickets, rodents, and mosquitoes.

Restore
Wood Repairs
Sill plates, band joists, floor joists, and subfloor rotted by decay fungus get cut out and rebuilt, not just treated.

Prepare
Moisture & Prevention
Crawl space encapsulation, vapor barriers, drainage correction, and dehumidification that shut the problem off at the source.

Why here is different
Moisture is the root cause, not the symptom
Humid outside air enters a vented crawl space, condenses on cool framing, and pushes wood moisture content past twenty percent. That is the threshold where decay fungus colonizes and where camel crickets, springtails, and oriental roaches take up residence. A perimeter spray does not touch any of it.
Neighborhoods built along tidal creeks — Sandbridge, Chic's Beach, Deep Creek, Larchmont, Hilton Village, Poquoson's waterfront, and the low ground west toward Smithfield — run consistently wetter than the regional average, and the pest history in those houses reflects it.
- Wood moisture measured at four points minimum
- Vapor barrier coverage and seam integrity documented
- Grade, downspouts, and splash-back corrected at the source
- Species confirmed before any product is selected

Restore
We rebuild the wood, not just treat it
Termites and decay fungus remove section from structural members. Killing the colony does not restore the load path. Guardex crews cut out compromised sill plates, band joists, floor joists, girders, and subfloor, sister or replace to code, and re-level where settlement has already started.
Doing the treatment and the carpentry under one company means the same technician who documented the damage signs the repair — which is exactly what an appraiser or a buyer's agent wants to see attached to the NPMA-33 report.

Carpenter Bee
Xylocopa virginica
Identification
Looks like a bumblebee with a shiny, hairless black abdomen. Males hover aggressively but cannot sting. Round entrance holes appear on unpainted or weathered softwood, usually on the underside of trim and rails.
Why it is here
Untreated and weathered exterior softwood is everywhere in this region, and the long warm season gives them an extended active period.
